‘SUNSET KIDS’: AUGUST 30th (WICKED COOL/THE ORCHARD) CONTAINS THE SINGLE “STRANGERS & THIEVES”, Feat. BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG

Jesse Malin has shared the video for “Room 13”, the lead track from his Lucinda Williams-produced new album Sunset Kids, which is out August 30 via Wicked Cool Records/Velvet Elk.

The “Room 13” video was directed by Dito Montiel, a friend from the punk rock scene (Gutterboy, Major Conflict) turned filmmaker (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Empire State, The Clapper).

The clip pays homage to some of Malin’s favourite movies like “Midnight Cowboy” and “Paris, Texas,” whilst also nodding to his habit of booking himself into hotels to do some songwriting in isolation. The video features cameos from friends such as Malin’s ‘D Generation’ bandmate Howie Pyro, the Dickies’ Leonard Graves Phillips and more.

“It was just a great time to make a video in there with (Montiel) and his eye,” says Malin. “Hotels are a place I sometimes go to write in to get that blank canvas feeling. It’s just this empty space.

“We’re in such a world with distractions, your phone and computer and all the social media. Sometimes if you get far away, in another time zone, you’re in a place where you’re forced to deal with yourself, thinking about that matters in life, who you care about, what really sticks when there isn’t as much noise to deal with. That’s what I’m getting at there.”

The Times says Malin “writes vivid songs with killer tunes and sings them with scary conviction”. He first met  Lucinda Williams, at a New York City jazz club in the early 2000’s, but it was when she invited him to see her open for what would be the final Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017, that talk of her producing the album first took shape.

“From the early frontier days of hardcore in New York, to all the punk rock and singer/songwriter touring,” says Malin, “it’s all been about survival and reinvention. I wanted to make an open-sounding record with the space to tell these stories.

“I like to write about characters and people I meet along the way. The dreamers, schemers, hustlers, romantics, lovers, leavers and believers.”

The title “Sunset Kids” reflects the album’s dedication to the people Malin lost during the making of this album, including its very own engineer David Bianco (Tom Petty ‘Wildflowers’), his lifelong friend and band-mate, Todd Youth and his father.

Other guests on the album are Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, who co-wrote and sings on “Strangers & Thieves” and singer songwriter Joseph Arthur, who appears on three tracks.
