The Boneshakers have spent 30 years bringing together blues, soul, funk and rock. On their new six-track release, “Pull Up The Roots – The Berlin & Hotel Sessions – Stripped To The Bone “, they take a more minimal approach, keeping the arrangements simple and letting the songs, vocals and instruments do the work.
Led by singer Jenny Langer and guitarist Randy Jacobs, the band have built a reputation for their musicianship and live performances. Randy Jacobs was previously a member of Was (Not Was), the American group behind the hit “Walk the Dinosaur”. He also co-wrote that song and has worked with artists including Bonnie Raitt and B.B. King.
The Boneshakers released their debut album, “Book of Spells”, in 1997. Their latest release is their 12th album and their second for Gulf Coast Records, following “Live To Be This” released in July 2025. “Pull Up The Roots” was recorded mainly at Kaleidoscope Studios in Berlin, with additional sessions in US studios and hotel rooms while the band were touring; and the result is an intimate and authentic recording.
Opening track “Your Luck Won’t Last” sets the tone with a relaxed, bluesy feel. Jenny’s smoky vocals take centre stage, while Randy adds guitar work that gives the song plenty of swagger. “Help The Poor”, associated with late blues legend B.B. King, takes the collection in a more traditional blues direction. Jenny Langer delivers the vocal with feeling, while Randy Jacobs keeps the guitar work simple to service the song.

The title track, “Pull Up The Roots”, brings a funkier sound. Originally recorded by Talking Heads on their 1983 album “Speaking in Tongues”, it gets a blues and soul interpretation here, with the groove brought firmly to the front. “Eat A Peach” has a laid-back feel, blending blues and soul with an easy-going rhythm.
“Fire On The Bayou”, originally recorded by New Orleans funk band The Meters, adds a strong dose of Louisiana flavour, with a deep, earthy groove. The collection closes with the beautifully understated “Fly On The Wall”, a soft, intimate track that gives Jenny Langer’s vocals room to shine.
This record moves between blues, soul, funk and Southern roots with ease. The playing feels natural; the performances have a warmth that comes from musicians who know each other well.
The Boneshakers have delivered a collection full of character, with strong performances and a sound that feels warm and direct. I’m rather hoping the band have at least another six songs up their sleeves. If they do, could they pull them out of the hat and give us a full album soon, please?
