Just one week to go until the uber-eclectic and classy Innervisions Festival hits various London venues for its second year.
Offering up such varied musical delights as Van Morrison, Mavis Staples, Maceo Parker, Robert Glasper, Stone Foundation, Gilberto Gil and a host of other UK and internatinal stars and up-and-coming artists.
Running from the third to seventh July in venues such as The Roundhouse, Shepherds Bush Empire, Indigo O2, Under The Bridge, Earth and Islington Assembly Hall.
Innervisions London delivers a broad church of genres: from soul, gospel, funk, jazz , blues and world music across the capital city’s premier venues.
Just added are Robert Glasper with a UK exclusive, Down To The Bone and Joel Culpepper.
Innervisions will be hosting residencies at Camden’s Roundhouse with Van Morrison, Mavis Staples supported by Stone Foundation, Robert Glasper & Maceo Parker.
There’s an exciting five day residency at West London’s Under The Bridge,with live shows from Janet Kay & Carroll Thompson, Down To The Bone, Joel Culpepper, Saul Williams & Monday Michiru.
Islington Assembly Hall will host performances from Richie Spice & The Element & Jarrod Lawson. Brazilian innovator Gilberto Gil, Gentleman’s Dub Club & Submotion Orchestra will perform at Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
Fela Kuti’s Saluting The Black President Afr-Beat tribute takes place at Earth in Hackney.
Robert Glasper is a Grammy-winning pianist and producer who has worked with Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Q-Tip, Norah Jones and Maxwell. He recently served as producer for the “Miles Ahead” biopic film based on the life of Miles Davis.
Joining Glasper for this new project and UK exclusive at Innervisions, will be Chris Dave, Derrick Hodge and DJ Jahi Sundance.
Down To The Bone’s brilliant debut album “From Manhattan to Staten” reached # 2 in the US Billboard Jazz Chart and helped make Down To The Bone the No.1 top selling independent Jazz artist of 1999.
Collaborations include Brian Auger, Roy Ayers, N’Dambi, Flora Purim, Jeremy Steig and Reuben Wilson. The UK’s Dome Records have just re-issued the band’s first three albums in a triple CD set. Supporting Down To The Bone at Innervisions is emerging soul-jazz vocalist Jen Kearney from Boston, USA.
Joel Culpepper is a much talked about South London-based artist who mixes hip hop and soul. Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music said of Joel: “That vocal takes me back to Sam Cooke, with a hint of Prince in there”.
Reggae act Richie Spice has a huge following on social media, ranked by Billboard Magazine among the top six performers at Reggae Splash. His brothers are Pliers, of Chaka Demus & Pliers fame,) and Spanner Banner.
Richie Spice will be performing with his band The Element, which features his sibling Spanner Banner. Richie’s hits include “Youth Dem Cold”, “Earth A Run Red”, “Marijuana” and “That Ghetto Girl”.
Another artist to seek out at the festival is Monday Michiru – a celebrated Japanese soul-jazz singer, songwriter, vocalist and flautist.
She has released a solo album and collaborated with the likes of Basement Jaxx, Kyoto Jazz Massive, DJ Krush and Masters at Work. The daughter of jazz pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano.
