Music Republic Magazine has a long reach. We find new musical talent around the globe all the time, who we think YOU need to know about and who you should hear…

Ziggy Alberts is a singer-songwriter, free-surfer & environmental enthusiast from the East Coast of Australia. He makes soulful acoustic coastal-folk for fans of early Ben Howard, James Bay, Jack Johnson and the like.

Following recent single “Love Me Now” out earlier this year, Ziggy has just released his new single “Laps Around The Sun”.

Ziggy at only 24 and an independent artist,  has already self-released four records, “Feels Like Home” (2012), “Made of Water” (2013), “Land & Sea” (2014) and “Four Feet in the Forest” EP (2016), before establishing his own independent label Commonfolk Records this year.

He has toured the world, playing intimate house gigs and established venues. Last year, (2017) he toured 11 European countries as part of the “Tell Me European Tour”, including festival performances in France (Fete De La Music), Netherlands (Mundial Festival and Surfana Festival) and Germany (Bochum Total).

He also embarked on the ‘Heaven Tour’, selling-out 2,000+ capacity theatres across Australia’s capital cities, playing Thebarton Theatre, Astor Theatre, Palais Theatre, QPAC Concert Hall and Enmore Theatre. 2018 has already seen Ziggy play the main Mojo stage at Byron Bay Bluesfest, playing to 5,000+ people and selling out 70% of tickets for his current North American tour in one week.

Ziggy has built up a global fanbase via digital streaming platforms. Ziggy’s music has been streamed over 95 million times globally, with streams of 100,000 and growing, on Apple and Spotify in the UK.

“Laps Around the Sun” was recorded by Garrett Kato, produced by Garrett Kato and Ziggy Alberts – released on Ziggy’s Commonfolk Records label.

Music Republic Magazine – “UNDISCOVERED ZONE”…………….

Artist Q & A:

  1. Your name and your age?

Ziggy Alberts. I am  24-years-old.

2.    Where you were born and where you are based now?

I was born on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, and am currently based nowhere.. got a sweet van named Aladdin.

3.    Instruments you play?
Guitar and started learning piano in the last couple of years.

4.    Age when you started in music and what was your first public performance?
I started playing guitar at 17, when I finished high school. I played my first live performance the same year.

5.    What song or artist lit the flame inside you to want to be a musician/artist.
I’d say the tipping point was Horrorshow. They are an epic Australian hip-hop duo and their storytelling is incredible.

6.    First song you wrote, at what age and what was it called, and what inspired it?
Oh gosh… I think it was called ‘Smile’, and I was 17, and I was inspired by being an emotional little boy who thought he was heartbroken…ha ha!

7. What music has been released so far? And what format and dates?
Feels Like Home (EP, 2012), Made Of Water (Album, 2013), Land & Sea (Album, 2014) and Four Feet In The Forest (EP, 2016). A whole bunch of singles and new album on the way.

8. How do you describe your own music style to a stranger who asks: “what kind of music do you play/sing”?
Coastal Folk, Singer-Songwriter.

9.   Strangest gig you have done?
I’ll tell you one of the coolest… I was supposed to play at this venue on the south coast of NSW, Australia, and we got rained out. The venue had no indoor option. And so, my mate called around and we got offered a yoga studio. We had set up and as everyone was inside the owner freaked out and said she was going to call the cops if we didn’t get out. I went to get money out to give everyone a refund for tickets, and so someone in the crowd put up their hand and said they’d host it at their house down the road. Next thing, everyone is helping me carry my gear out to the van, in the pouring rain; we all go 2 streets over and set up again. It was a really beautiful community moment of coming together.

         10. A: X Factor?, B: The Voice? C: Britain’s Got Talent? D: Gouge your own eyes out with a rusty spoon?
I just got two eye surgeries so my eyes are nice and new and expensive ha ha! So I’d go Britain’s Got Talent, and I’d dress up in Lycra and make a dance performance to a Salt ‘n’            Peppa song (probably Push It) – and not mention once that I was a musician, and hopefully bomb out early – despite my dance skillz.

         11. Day jobs you have done…………………?
Assisting in Stone Masonry, Waiter, Barista, Painter, Lawn Mowing and Car Washing.

        12. Guilty secret?
I love pop music and consider the girls from Salt ‘n’ Peppa, Queens of the Universe.

       13. What two recordings could you not live without if you were stuck on a desert island?
Could I have an album? Just one? It’d be “Every Kingdom” by Ben Howard. No question about it.

      14.  If you believed in reincarnation; who or what would you want to come back as?
A dolphin on the east coast of Australia. They seem to have life pretty figured out.

     15. Pet ‘hate’?
Being given two plastic straws when you asked twice for no single use plastic. Drunk obnoxious groups of humans at live music events.
